We attended RCEM2025, which was held in Barcelona, Spain!!

Good evening!

We participated in RCEM2025! RCEM stands for the Symposium on River, Coastal and Estuarine Morphodynamics, which is basically a conference in the fields of rivers and coasts.

This conference was held in Barcelona, Spain, from September 1 to 5. From our lab, Mitani and Kasagi (M2), Song and Kitayama (M1) took part as presenters, and Kido (D2) also joined us.

At the conference, I realized how difficult it is to give a presentation in English, especially with my limited skills. At the same time, I was impressed to see so many people conducting research in this field and presenting interesting results. It really inspired me and made me think, “I need to work harder, too.”

Come to think of it, poster presentations are quite interesting. You put your research onto an A0-sized sheet, stand next to it, and explain your work to people who show interest. Since the presenters carefully explain until the audience can fully understand, you get to learn more deeply about their research, and sometimes even become a bit friendly with them. I’d definitely like to try it myself if I ever get the chance.

I also did some sightseeing!!

Barcelona is such a comfortable place to stay. First of all, the sun rises late and sets late. It feels about two hours later than in Japan — it’s still dark around 7 a.m., and even at 9 p.m. it’s still bright.

It’s perfect for a night owl like me.

And the food is delicious. Absolutely delicious. Everything I ate, from ham to paella to sangria, was just amazing.

The city itself is beautiful, too. There are many works of Gaudí, famous for the Sagrada Família. The historical buildings are truly impressive.

That concludes my report on participating in RCEM2025!
